Girls Footy at the Ashy Redbacks is shaping up to be bigger and better in 2018. So what are you waiting for?

Be a part of it!

We love our Girls Footy at Ashy (as do our sponsor, Physioworks Health Group) and we have an exceptional program which allows any girl who would like to try footy to feel welcome and give footy a go in a safe, friendly environment.

Our girls love to have fun, but they also know they take their footy seriously.  Ashy values the Girls as an integral part of our club and we actively support them as they become successful footballers.

And what success we had in 2017! Two of our four girls teams made it to the finals, with our U16 Girls crowned as Runners Up in Division 1.

Places will be limited in 2018 so please get in quick to ensure that you don't miss out.

Got questions about what it's like to play footy at Ashy? Contact Kim Ledder via email: girlsfooty@ashyredbacks.org.au or phone 0402 043 800.

    2018 Season Registrations

Numbers will be limited in Season 2018 so once registrations open in November 2017, you'll need to sign up quickly. If you have any questions about registrations, contact Brendan Foley, Registrar on registrations@ashyredbacks.org.au

    Age Groups

In 2018 we are aiming to field the following teams (subject to confirmation from the league and registration numbers):

    • Under 11
    • Under 14
    • Under 16
    • Youth Girls (Under 18)

Our football league is the Yarra Junior Football League, otherwise known as the YJFL. Our games are played on a Sunday from April through until September.

For registration purposes, your age group is based on your age as of the 1st of January 2018.  i.e. if you were born on the 1st of March 2002, you would be playing U16 in 2018. See Registrations for a guide of age levels.

    Rules

YJFL has a set of Altered Rules for Girls. There are 16 players on the ground, no kicking off the ground is allowed but there is tackling and our girls love it!

    In Season Training

Everyone has to start somewhere.  Our AFL accredited coaches will teach you the correct techniques, help you gain match fitness and the confidence to be playing by the start of the season.

Training times will be announced upon appointment of all coaches. It's preferred that training for girls is held on the same night as it enables simulated match play within sessions and age based skill development.

    Uniforms

Uniforms and other club merchandise is ordered online through our Club website.

The only 'must have' items players need are: Socks, Red Shorts (Home) and White Shorts (Away). The Club supplies playing jumpers. Mouth guards and footy boots are compulsory.

    Pathways

Girls junior footy is not limited to playing for our Club. For those with emerging talent, the YJFL has a representative side, competing each year against teams from other football regions.

We have current Ashy Girls in the Youth Girls Academy at Sandringham Dragons and Oakleigh Chargers as well as a former Ashy Girls, Steph Harvie, at VFL sides Eastern Devils, and Millie Klingbiel at Geelong Cats.  This is a stepping stone away to playing in the new AFL Women’s League. How exciting is that!
