Ashy Review - Round 1 (Proudly sponsored by Jellis Craig)

The 2017 Season was launched with a party at Burwood Reserve on Friday 21 March. Hundreds of members turned out to celebrate and weren't deterred by the wet conditions. The following day, Auskick started across our three centres and then we ran out on the ground in our red and green jumpers on Sunday for Round 1.

We have 33 teams at the Ashy Redbacks this season and the results across the Club for Round 1 were admirable. As players gel, skills are developed during training sessions and the Ashy spirit comes to the fore, we look forward to seeing how teams progress over the coming weeks. Highlights of our first round include: seeing our newly formed 'Camberwell Sharks and Ashy Redbacks' team having their first game (and smashing it BTW) and our U13 Girls and U8 Boys all ran on to the field for the first time. Let their footy careers begin!

Preliminary Finals Week

We had four teams facing off for a ticket to the Grand Final this weekend.  The teams were:

  • U11 Red
  • U12 Black
  • U15 Girls Green
  • Youth Girls

U11 Red deserve a special mention as they were in front for most of the game and ended up losing by 1 point in the dying minutes of the match.

Here's a note to the families of U11 Red by Coach, Greg Lasscock:

"I hope you have all recovered from the game on Sunday.  It was a tough day for the boys and even tougher for the parents to see our little champs so devastated. They can all be proud of their efforts and the great team spirit and improvement they showed throughout the season"  Coach - Greg Lasscock

Match Report for U12 Black by Coach, Greg Dixon

U12 Blacks v Greythorn, Zerbes Reserve

Ashburton B      5.7-37

Greythorn R    3.3-21

Preliminary finals are always a hard fought match and this was no exception, to give credit to Greythorn they never gave up.  Our boys played as a team, great passes, long kicks, strong marking and fantastic backing up of their team mates.

Best on ground, Top 3 Max, Aidan, Jack but there where many more Cal, Will O, Angus, Matty, Alex T, Xandy, Matty, Harrison, Jordan, Josh, Cam P, Cam W, Luke, Tom W, Tom Z.

Goal Kickers; Josh 2, Alex 2, Cam Witt

Play of the Day; Angus, Max and Jack clearing out the centre bounces

Goal of the day -Josh took a pounding down in the goal square and still kicked 2.

Mark of the day -Alex, a big mark in a crowded forward line.

Top Team player- again many to chose from Cal, Luke, Angus, Matty, Will O these boys repeatedly went in hard and got the ballout to moving team mates.

Redbacks Review - Week 1 of Finals

What courageous performances from all of our teams that reached the first week of finals.  Our U15 Red Girls and U13 Black went straight through to the Grand Finals, our Youth Girls, U15 Green Girls, U11 Red and U12 Black all have another opportunity this coming weekend to get a ticket to the big dance!

Whilst our U14 Green and U14 Black team were unable to cross the line, they played with fantastic Ashy spirit from start to finish.  We extend our huge congratulations to all of the players, officials and families that have had such a fantastic season at Ashy.

What a great season by U14 Green - well done boys!

Redbacks Review - Round 12

It's crunch time throughout the YJFL as our teams head towards footy finals.

Unfortunately we had some upsets this week with our Youth Girls (45), who are sitting top of the table, getting tumbled by a strong line up from Kew Rovers (70) and Banyule (81) ran over our Colts Red (23) as Benny Andrews had to face up to a post-match interview that has been posted on YFJL Live - you did a great job Ben!  You can check out YJFL post match interviews for Colts teams here.

On the upside, our U15s all did really well.  Perhaps it was the significance of the Daniel Lagastes Medal Round but all three teams were certainly playing with focus.  Our U15 Red Girls, U15 Green Girls and U15 Boys smashed their opposition by big margins - awesome efforts!

We had a lot of milestone game achievements across the Club and plenty to be grateful for as we got together at Club night last Sunday.

Redbacks Review - Round 11

Footy felt like it was back this weekend!!  Many teams returned to more normal numbers as holidays drew to a close.

The U12s and U11s had great advantage to those that had been resting (aka sunning themselves somewhere exotic) as they enjoyed matches against touring teams from Perth on the Thursday 7 July and Saturday 10 July.

The conditions were cold yet clear.  The grounds are soft and the boots are dirty.  Just the way we like it....

There are only 3 more rounds until we hit finals so it is time to make the most of every training session and every game.  Rumour has it that if we continue to take good wins, it is a possibility that we will have 9 teams playing finals.  There's only two words left to say "GoAshy"!!

Redbacks Review - Round 10

School holidays created havoc during Round 10 as teams were decimated of players, many lost to warmer locations!  Many of our teams invited players to 'play up' from other teams and this was a fantastic development experience for many of our players that were given this opportunity.  On some rare occasions, we were required to forfeit due to low numbers so enabling players to still get a game was a good reward for their commitment.  Opposing teams experienced the same difficulties so across the Club and League, our results were up and down.

Thanks to all the families that organised holidays around the games of Round 10 and braved the cool temps of four degrees recorded on Sunday morning at Burwood Reserve.  Frost was on our grounds and Redbackers were jumping up and down to avoid hypothermia!

Redbacks Review - Round 8

It appears that some spiders like the wet conditions and others don't!  There were some tough days at the office last weekend as we fought it out against the winter rain.  Our newest team, Colts Black, is doing a spectacular job in such a short time and last week, narrowly missed another victory.

Click here for all the latest match reports.

And as it is the long weekend this coming Sunday, you can sit back, have a read and relax.

See you on Sunday 19 June.

Redbacks Review - Round 5

We kicked off Round 5 with Friday Night Club Night.

A visit from AFL legend, Luke Hodge, Hawthorn FC sent a wave of hysteria through our members as he joined us to present Redbacks Rising Star and Milestone Games Awards.  Red and green was mixed with yellow and brown as all the Hawks' fans came out to meet their idol.  Luke did not disappoint - he was as impressive off the field as he is on and we are thrilled he was able to be a part of our evening.

With the grading process now complete in many of our older teams, our players settle in divisions to match their abilities - sometimes we see tougher competition initially but once grades settle, we should say goodbye to white-washes and say hello to more nail-biters!
